The Most Beautiful Natural Wonders in the Philippines

5 places ยท updated 13 October 2026

In short: By our ranking, the most beautiful natural wonders in the Philippines are Taal Volcano, Chocolate Hills and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. The list covers 5 natural wonders. Last updated 13 October 2026.

The Philippines sits on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where oceanic plates sink beneath the archipelago and feed a chain of active volcanoes. Alongside them, uplifted coral limestone has been dissolved by tropical rain into caves, cones and underground rivers. Fire and water together have given these islands landforms that look unlike anywhere else.

Taal Volcano rises from the middle of a lake on Luzon, itself filling an ancient caldera, with a crater lake of its own on Volcano Island. The Chocolate Hills of Bohol are more than a thousand rounded limestone mounds that turn brown in the dry season. In the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River on Palawan, a navigable river flows for kilometres through a limestone cave straight into the sea. Mount Pulag, the highest peak of Luzon, is known for its grassy summit and the sea of clouds that fills the valleys at dawn. Mayon Volcano in Albay is celebrated for its almost perfectly symmetrical cone, and is one of the most active volcanoes in the country.

Its written history begins in 1572, the year Augustinian friars founded the town of Taal on the lakeshore, and it is a violent one. The eruption of 1754, the greatest on record, lasted from May to December; it buried old Taal and forced the towns of Tanauan, Lipa and Sala to move, and it blocked the lake's outlet so that the water level rose. Cut off from the sea, some fish adapted to fresh water, among them the sardine known locally as tawilis.

Did you know? In 1965 cold base surges raced several kilometres across the lake surface, killing about a hundred people.

They are a form of cone karst. The hills are made of marine limestone, rich in fossils, laid down on the sea floor a few million years ago and then raised above sea level. Rain and groundwater dissolved the rock along cracks and weak zones, leaving the more resistant parts as regular cones while the ground between them was worn down. The neatness of their shapes, and how evenly they are spaced, is what makes the place so arresting.

Did you know? Popular theories of a volcanic origin collapse on one simple point: no volcanic rock has been found anywhere in the hills.

The river's last stretch is tidal: seawater pushes up to about 6 km into the cave, so a thin layer of fresh water floats on top of salt water. Inside are huge chambers, including the Italian's Chamber, about 360 metres long and one of the largest cave rooms known, and galleries of stalactites and stalagmites lit only by the boatman's lamp.

Did you know? Nine species of bat and two species of cave swiftlet live inside the underground river's caves.

The mountain is cold by tropical standards. The summit climate sits on the border between subtropical highland and subpolar oceanic types, frost is common, and in the coolest months temperatures at the top can drop below freezing, making it the coldest place in the country, although snow has never been recorded. Rainfall is heavy, averaging around 4,500 mm a year.

Did you know? Snow has never been recorded on the summit, but hailstorms sometimes whiten the grassland so that it looks snow-covered.

That perfect shape comes from a violent and extremely frequent history. Mayon has erupted at least 50 times since records began in 1616, and independent counts pushing the total number of eruptions since antiquity to nearly 70, giving it one of the shortest average intervals between eruptions of any volcano on Earth โ€” roughly once every eight years across four centuries of record-keeping.

Did you know? In 1938 Mayon and its surroundings became the Philippines' first national park, later reclassified as Mayon Volcano Natural Park in 2000.

How this list is ranked

Places are chosen for how they look, not for how famous they are: each one has its own description and a photograph credited to its author. The order is a single world ranking that weighs the beauty of the place in curated photography together with how widely it is documented โ€” the number of language editions of its encyclopedia article and how often that article is read in a year. The list is rebuilt as places are added, so the order and the counts on this page are always current.

Questions people ask

What are the most beautiful natural wonders in the Philippines?
On our list, Taal Volcano ranks first, followed by Chocolate Hills and Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park.
How were the Chocolate Hills formed?
They are thought to be marine limestone that was uplifted and then eroded by rain and groundwater into regular rounded hills. Their grass dries to brown in the dry season, which gave them their name.
Why is Mayon Volcano so symmetrical?
Mayon is a young stratovolcano built by frequent eruptions of lava and ash that have spread evenly around its summit vent, so its slopes have not yet been worn down by erosion.
Is the Puerto Princesa Underground River a UNESCO site?
Yes. It was inscribed in 1999 for its river that flows through a limestone cave directly into the sea, with a full mountain-to-sea ecosystem around it.
How many natural wonders are on this list in the Philippines?
The list covers 5 natural wonders.
